‘Another blow’ for gig economy firms as Addison Lee drivers secure settlements

THREE Addison Lee drivers in a class action lawsuit demanding workers’ rights have reached an out of court settlement with the private hire company.

Leigh Day, which is representing more than 600 drivers in the case, said the settlement is “yet another blow to big firms operating in the gig economy.”

GMB organiser Steve Garelick said: “For seven years, GMB has stood alongside our members in this fight for justice.

“We are proud to have played a role in securing this outcome, which ensures that Addison Lee will pay drivers the millions they are owed. ”

A hearing to determine whether the rest of the claimants are workers and entitled to workers’ rights such as holiday pay and minimum wage is due to take place later this year.

A 2017 employment tribunal ruling that Addison Lee drivers are workers was upheld by the Employment Appeal Tribunal in 2018 and the Court of Appeal in 2021. Addison Lee disputes the rulings.
