How Ireland’s broken health system made Denis O’Brien even richer

It was a bittersweet couple of weeks for Denis O’Brien. Last Friday week, André Jordan, the Polish-Brazilian property developer who drew up the master plan for Quinta do Lago, the enormous high-end leisure resort development now owned by O’Brien, died at the age of 90. Jordan had the vision for the stretch of the Algarve; over the past 25 years the Irish businessman delivered it.

Last week O’Brien made one of the biggest turns of his business career. The sale of the Beacon Hospital in Sandyford, south Dublin, to the Australian investment fund Macquarie is estimated to have delivered a profit of about €250 million.
