Netflix Reveals the Fate of Hit Show Money Heist’s Spinoff Berlin

Money Heist was a huge success on Netflix, which translated into the Berlin spinoff, which has just been renewed for Season 2.

Money Heist followed a team of bank robbers attempting to orchestrate elaborate heists, and it became a true phenomenon worldwide. One of the characters, Berlin, became a fan favorite, and Netflix rewarded the audience with a spinoff which premiered in late 2023. Almost two months after its release, Netflix revealed the series will return with Season 2. “The iconic character, played by Pedro Alonso, will be back with a new heist and more love,” the streamer said on Monday.

Guy Ritchie’s 2019 The Gentlemen film will expand the universe with a Netflix TV series spinoff coming soon.

“During its premiere week, Berlin was the most-watched series globally and reached the top 10 in 91 countries,” Netflix said. “Since then, it has remained in the top 10 for seven consecutive weeks in non-English TV, amassing 348 million hours viewed and 53 million total views. The series is now ranked at number 9 among the most-watched non-English language series in the history of Netflix.” At the moment, Berlin sits in the seventh spot in the Global Top 10 TV Non-English, with almost eight million hours viewed (via Tudum).

Could Berlin Overlap Money Heist In Season 2?

Berlin was both a spinoff and a prequel to the hit show Money Heist. The events followed the title character, and he was the only character from the original show returning as a main character. Berlin Season 1 included cameos from Raquel Murillo (played by Itziar Ituño) and Alicia Sierra (Najwa Nimri), but the rest of the events from Money Heist hadn’t started yet.

Álex Pina, Money Heist‘s creator, who also created the spinoff alongside Money Heist executive producer Esther Martínez Lobato revealed that Berlin Season 1 took place around 2013 in an interview with SensaCine. Meanwhile, the events of the original series started around 2017. Which gives Berlin enough time to pull off more heists in between. With over three years in between, Berlin Season 2 could have more adventures without overlapping with the events of Money Heist Season 1. On top of that, Berlin died in the original series’ Part 2, so the show could only function as a prequel.

Berlin Season 1 followed the title character pulling off an ambitious heist in Paris, France. He and his gang of misfits planned to steal 63 royal jewels worth €44 million (around $47.3 million) from a luxury auction home. Season 1 ends with Berlin and his new crew getting away with the heist, while Camille gets a payoff and enjoys her new life with her best friend.

So far, Netflix hasn’t revealed the plot for Berlin Season 2 nor a release date, but with filming starting in 2025, it might see a December 2025 premiere, just like Season 1.
