The Chase star Darragh Ennis speaks out on how much money he makes after fans quiz him on what happens when he snatches the prize fund

The Chase star Darragh Ennis has spoken out about whether he makes any money after snatching the prize fund on the show.

Darragh, 43, who is known as The Menace on the programme, joined the line-up of clever general knowledge experts in 2020 after appearing as a contestant three years earlier.

The gameshow sees contestants answer quiz questions in a bid to bank a cash prize and they must attempt to get more questions right than The Chasers  in order to stay in the game.

At the end, the contestants have a prize fund worth tens of thousands thousands, which can be suddenly taken away by defeating them.

During a social media question and answer session, Darragh was asked about what happens to the prize money of he or one of the other Chasers takes it.

He said: ‘A lot of people ask me, “Do we get the money when we beat contestants on The Chase? Do we win that money”

‘I wish we did, I really wish we did. I’d be a lot better off, believe me, but no, we don’t.

‘The money isn’t actually real until someone wins, it’s just numbers on a screen until it’s won, so it just disappears.’

One of his followers commented: ‘I used to think the Chasers got paid like 30k every episode,’ to which he replied with a laughing emoji.

It comes after a picture of The Chase star Jenny Ryan looking unrecognisable in a snap from an old appearance on BBC quiz show Only Connect emerged.

Jenny, 41, who is known as The Vixen on the ITV game show hosted by Bradley Walsh, shared a throwback snap of herself on the other quiz show.

The red-haired quizzer joined chasers Anne Hegerty, Shaun Wallace, Mark Labbet, and Paul Sinha on The Chase in 2015.

But before taking her place as a regular on the popular show, Jenny had competed on several game shows, including Only Connect in 2010.

Jenny Ryan as she normally looks (pictured on The Chase) looked quite different before she adopted her famous beehive hairstyle

Known for her striking red beehive ponytail, which inspired her nickname, Jenny looked rather different in the old appearance – sporting an auburn and blonde bob.

Jenny found success on the show as part of the team The Gamblers, who triumphed in the third series.

Sharing the throwback snap on Instagram on Friday, Jenny said: ‘POV: It’s 2011 and your #OnlyConnect team are fighting to be crowned the champion of champions!’

In the snap, Jenny is seen sporting a red T-shirt with a black vest underneath, as well as a pair of red glasses.

It is not the Chaser’s only other quizzing appearance however, as she first graced screens in 2003 on University Challenge.

Then in 2006 she featured on Mastermind – choosing teen series Buffy The Vampire Slayer as her specialist subject.

Just two years later she made it onto Are You an Egghead?, featuring in both the 2008 and 2009 series.

It comes after Jenny gave a behind-the-scene insight into the drama between the contestants and revealed some ‘greedy’ competitors fight for the spotlight.

Speaking to The Mirror last week, she explained while people are often judged by their teammates for taking the lower or the minus offer, there’s another move which causes the most drama.

Jenny said: ‘Occasionally there is a bit of side-eye if they have gone against the advice of the team. Actually it’s more often if they have gone for the higher offer, if they’ve been advised to go for the low offer.’

‘It’s like a, “I can’t believe they’ve taken that risk”, it’s a huge risk. It’s much more important to get all of the players back to the final, there’s more chance of winning.’

Jenny added: ‘Anyone that can put their pride aside and play for the team and take the low offer as a consensus, I agree with it. If it is someone being a bit cheeky or greedy I understand that furore.’

Last month, viewers of The Chase were left in complete shock after a contestant made history when they received a jaw-dropping offer.

Four new hopefuls took on Darragh ‘The Menace’ Ennis, 43, during the episode of the game show.

The first player, Kim, accumulated £5,000 in her cash builder round, however viewers were left stunned when Darragh presented her with an eye-watering six-figure cash offer.

If Kim was to go high, she could have potentially brought £100,000 for her team.

Host of the popular ITV quiz show Bradley Walsh and viewers at home were taken aback by the extraordinary sum, which Darragh noted as the ‘highest offer ever’ for a player.

He then went on to say that any other offer thereafter would be lower.

It is not the chaser’s only other quizzing appearance however, as she first graced screens in 2003 on University Challenge (seen in February)

Although Kim seemed tempted, she ultimately played it safe, choosing not to go it and keeping her initial £5,000.

Darragh went on to defeat player two, Owen, and player three, Georgina.

The final player, Perry, added an extra twist to the show by opting for the higher offer of £88,000.

Despite the team’s unexpected success, it was short-lived as in the final chase, Perry and Georgina answered 14 questions between them, but Darragh managed to defeat them with just seconds to spare.
