Tottenham decision was so close fans and pundits thought technology was broken

Tottenham fans and Tim Sherwood were initially left baffled by a very close goalline technology call in the game against Luton.

Alfie Doughty appeared to clear the ball from behind the line during Spurs’ 2-1 win over the Hatters, but Jarred Gillett’s watch didn’t buzz, leading to suggestions the technology was broken.

The incident happened with the score tied at 1-1 in the second half.

As the shot came in, the ball deflected across the goal and looked destined to go in, but Doughty was there to make an unbelievable goalline clearance, which left several fans stunned and denied Brennan Johnson a goal.

Writing on X, formerly known as Twitter, one fan said: “Are we ever going to get a good replay of that Johnson goal? Or the goalline technology graphic? I’m convinced that was a goal.”

Another added: “It 100% crossed the line – only Tottenham dude. I swear.”

While someone else said: “That wasn’t in???”

Sky Sports pundit and former Tottenham manager Sherwood was also adamant the ball was over the line.

Speaking on Soccer Saturday, he said: “That looks over the line to me, but his watch hasn’t gone off.

“Is it [goalline technology] broken?

“That’s surely over the line.”

However, an aerial replay of the decision showed the whole ball had not crossed the line, albeit by a matter of millimetres.

Jermaine Pennant believes Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou would leave Tottenham if Liverpool ‘came knocking

In the end, it didn’t matter as Heung-min Son scored a late winner to move into the top four, temporarily.

Things started badly for Ange Postecoglou‘s men as Tahith Chong put Luton into the lead inside three minutes.

Spurs equalised early in the second half through an Issa Kabore own goal.

Doughty then denied Johnson before Son popped up at the death with a late goal to spark wild scenes in the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
