Torrance residents learn how to have healthier lives at Optum health fair – Daily Breeze

More than 500 Torrance residents who are at least 65 years old recently participated in a special patient appreciation health fair that Optum, a health care provider, put on at the Torrance Cultural Arts Center.

The Torrance health fair took place at the same time as more than a dozen others throughout Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino countied to provide resources and information for patients and residents. This health fairs were Optum’s first in-person events since the coronavirus pandemic.

“Optum doctors and care teams provided health screenings such as annual wellness and blood pressure checks and helped Medicare Advantage patients set goals to live a healthier 2023,” said Shawn Migliaccio, senior vice president of marketing and brand for Optum Pacific West, “all to help the Torrance community lead stronger, healthier lives.”

At Optum, health equity for all is a goal officials are working toward with local communities, to remove barriers and “provide equal access to quality care,” according to the Optum website.

During the appreciation fair late last month, health care professionals provided educational classes designed to help patients better understand the numbers and healthy ranges for their blood sugar, blood pressure, cholesterol and body weight. They also stressed the importance of exercise, movement and being active.

The classes highlighted how fiber, footcare, label reading, and knowing about sodium, cholesterol and healthy fats can help people live a healthier life, officials said.

Those who attended the Oct. 26 health fair also had time to mingle and received healthy snacks and door prizes.

Given that the event was well received, Optum officials said, it is likely they will provide similar classes again in the future. Optum also provides virtual health classes throughout the year for patients and anyone who would like to attend. Information about those offerings can be found at optum.com.
