The nautical and tourism sector of Gran Canaria has consolidated its position in the high-end market after the renewal of the Blue Flag for the Pasito Blanco marina in the south of Gran Canaria.
The award comes during a historic year for the Spanish coast, which leads the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) world ranking with a record 677 beaches receiving distinctions. The Canary Islands contribute a total of 52 of these distinctions to the national tally, a figure that reinforces the archipelago’s competitiveness in terms of sustainability, safety, and environmental management of its waters at a time of heightened demands from international operators.
The Minister of Public Works, Housing and Mobility of the Government of the Canary Islands, Pablo Rodríguez, highlighted the impact of this recognition for the maritime infrastructure of the islands, noting that the Blue Flag in Pasito Blanco is not an isolated achievement, but the result of a continuous policy of modernization and environmental respect at key points of our coast.
Rodríguez emphasized that efficient and sustainable marinas act as catalysts for the blue economy, attracting investment that seeks technical excellence and minimal impact on local ecosystems.
Health management and facility safety have been key factors in maintaining the southern port’s status. José Gilberto Moreno, director of Puertos Canarios, emphasized the strict adherence to water quality standards and the provision of first aid services required by the international jury.
Moreno emphasized that the environmental health of coastal areas and the health safety of residents and visitors constitute the true invisible infrastructure that sustains the prestige of the ports and beaches of the autonomous community.
The maintenance of this quality seal at Pasito Blanco coincides with the overall progress across Spain, where the Valencian Community retains its leading position with 151 Blue Flags, followed by Andalusia with 143 and Galicia with 118 awards. The Canary Islands, with its 52 Blue Flags, places the province of Las Palmas at the forefront of premium nautical offerings, protecting the destination against competing Mediterranean markets by accrediting operational standards that combine user comfort with the preservation of the marine environment.
