The 15-year fixed-rate mortgage also fell, while both rates remained above year-earlier levels.
Freddie Mac, which publishes the Primary Mortgage Market Survey, reported a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage average of 6.65% for the week ended August 20, 2026, down from 6.67% the previous week, according to Freddie Mac.
The 30-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 6.58% a year earlier. The current rate is therefore 0.07 percentage point higher than the year-earlier average.
The 15-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 5.95%, down from 5.96% the previous week. A year earlier, the 15-year mortgage averaged 5.69%.
