As Craig Dubecki approached 65, he started to do the math on his retirement, and he didn’t like what he saw. His thirty years working as an industrial contractor in sales, marketing, and project management did not come with an employee pension, and the Canada Pension Plan and Old Age Security weren’t going to be enough to cover his lifestyle. “I really thought I was going to have to work into my 70s, and that was just creating health problems and anxiety,” says the now 67-year-old Kitchener, Ontario resident. He felt sentimental about the family home he’d raised his kids in, and his music hobby meant that he hated the idea of sharing walls with neighbours if he were to downsize to an apartment. Then, he saw a TV commercial for reverse mortgages, approached his broker, and signed up for one last year.
