A NEW initiative at a Rotherham water polo club has been hailed by Swim England North East as a “fantastic addition to the community.”
Paddle Pals at Rotherham Metro is a new water polo session designed specifically for people with cognitive impairments, offering a safe, inclusive, and enjoyable environment to get active, build confidence, and connect with others.

Led by Metro coach Matt Birch – who is also North East Coach of the Year – the sessions at the Maltby-based club focus on fun, participation, and personal development rather than competition.
A spokesperson for Swim England North East said: “With his experience and passion for the sport, Matt has created a programme that introduces players to the basics of water polo in a way that is accessible, supportive, and engaging for everyone involved.
“The benefits of Paddle Pals extend far beyond the pool.
“Participants can improve their physical health, coordination, and water confidence, while also developing important social skills such as teamwork, communication, and resilience.
“Just as importantly, the sessions provide a space where players can relax, have fun, and enjoy being part of a welcoming community.
“Paddle Pals is already proving to be a fantastic addition to the local community—bringing smiles, building confidence, and showing that sport really can be for everyone.”
Added the spokesperson: “Gratitude is also extended to Places for People at Maltby and Ambience Healthcare Ltd for their generous support, helping turn this vision into reality.”
