The Batman cinematic universe did not just smash box office records, it bankrolled massive property empires and triggered financial collapses.
Beyond the heroes and villains lies a trail of multimillion-dollar property plays, secret asset dumps, and remote fortresses hidden from the Hollywood spotlight.
While stars like Jack Nicholson secured a lucrative portfolio through savvy salary gambles, others faced bankruptcies and eye-watering real estate slashes trying to maintain their private estates.
Here’s how these Gotham’s legends spent their blockbuster paychecks.

Kim Basinger
Kim Basinger, who played Bruce Wayne’s love interest, Vicki Vale, faced a major financial disaster due to her real estate investments.
In 1989, at the height of her Batman fame, the Oscar winner spent $29 million ($US20 million) to buy nearly 1,700 acres of land in Braselton, Georgia.
The L.A. Confidential star hoped to turn the area into a big tourist and film destination, but the project failed and became a financial drain.
Basinger’s money problems worsened after she was sued for $12.9 million ($US8.9 million) for backing out of the 1992 movie Boxing Helena.

Unable to pay, the actress filed for bankruptcy in 1993. Eventually, she settled the lawsuit for $5.5 million ($3.8 million) and sold her land at a loss to rebuild her finances.
Now worth $15 million ($US10 million), the 72-year-old’s current portfolio includes a residence in the Los Angeles suburb of Woodland Hills, which she acquired for $150,000 in the late 1970s.
Basinger also previously invested $783,000 ($US540,000) in a Woodland Hills home in 2001, which she later placed on the market in 2017 with an asking price slightly under $1.5 million ($US1 million).

Michael Keaton
Michael Keaton earned $7 million ($US5 million) for his 1989 debut as Bruce Wayne/Batman and $15 million ($US11 million) for the 1992 sequel, Batman Returns.
The Golden Globe winner famously rejected a $21 million ($US15 million) offer for Batman Forever, citing the script “sucked” and creative differences with director Joel Schumacher.
The Beetlejuice star, who has a $72 million ($US50 million) net worth, still owns a Montana ranch and a $1.8 million ($US1.3 million) Pacific Palisades home bought in 1987.
In Santa Barbara, he purchased a $2.1 million ($US1.5 million) home in 1989, selling it for $4.4 million ($US3.1 million) in 2011.
The 74-year-old actor bought a $7 million ($US5 million) estate in 2016 and listed a Summerland ranch for $12.6 million ($8.72 million).

Jack Nicholson
Jack Nicholson’s $153 million ($US100 million) real estate portfolio was largely funded by his iconic role as the Joker in 1989’s Batman.
The three-time Oscar winner took a gamble, trading his usual $15 million ($US10 million) fee for a reduced $9 million ($US6 million) salary in exchange for a percentage of the film’s total box office, merchandise sales, and future sequels.
This savvy negotiation paid off handsomely when the film became a worldwide sensation.
The back-end deal resulted in an estimated $138 million ($US90 million) windfall, marking one of the biggest paydays in cinematic history and boosting his total net worth to $615 million ($US400 million).

The 89-year-old’s primary residence is a three-acre Beverly Hills compound on Mulholland Drive, purchased in 1969 for $7.6 million ($US5 million) and now valued at $15 million ($US10 million).
The estate includes the former home of neighbour and friend Marlon Brando, which Nicholson acquired in 2005.
His portfolio also features a 70-acre Malibu ranch and a beachfront retreat in Hawaii.
Past property trades include selling a 28-acre Malibu estate for $5.3 million ($US3.5 million) in 2011.
In 2013, the Witches of Eastwick star offloaded an Aspen retreat for $16.8 million ($US11 million.
He purchased the property in 1980 for $842,000 ($US550,000) after using it for years to get better TV reception for Los Angeles Lakers games.

Danny DeVito
Danny DeVito, who brought the Penguin to life in 1992’s Batman Returns, has built a $116 million ($US80 million) net worth through lucrative property trades.
For over 20 years, he and estranged wife Rhea Perlman owned a Beverly Hills mega-mansion purchased in 1994.
They offloaded the home in 2015 for $36.7 million ($US24 million) after initially seeking over $45 million ($US30 million) off-market.
The former couple also owned a beach house located along the California coast.
In 2022, the pair put their Mount Washington property on the market with a $2.37 million ($US1.55 million) price tag.
In 2021, DeVito purchased a residence in Brooklyn through an off-market deal, with estimates suggesting he paid $2.9 million ($US2 million).

Michelle Pfeiffer
Michelle Pfeiffer’s portrayal of Catwoman in the 1992 film Batman Returns stands as one of the most acclaimed performances in the history of the superhero genre.
The 68-year-old actress shares a $362 million ($US250 million) net worth with husband TV producer David E. Kelley.
The couple own a vast and impressive real estate portfolio that spans several locations.
The pair owned a 340-acre coastal estate in a remote wilderness area of British Columbia.
They reportedly forked out more than $50 million ($US35 million) to acquire the residence and build a sprawling cabin retreat.
The property is so remote that it does not even have a postcode and is accessible only by boat. They listed the property for sale in October 2017 with a $40 million ($US28 million) asking price.
In 2004 and 2008, the couple spent a total of $29.8 million ($US20.6 million) to acquire two parcels in the San Francisco suburb of Woodside, giving them a total of 8.7 acres.
After listing it for $42 million ($US29 million) in 2018, they sold the property for $31 million ($US22 million) in January 2020.

In September 2018, the couple bought the house next door for $11.1 million ($US7.7 million), bringing their total investment in the two neighbouring properties to $22.9 ($US15.8 million).
In January 2020, they sold the first property for $13.1 million ($US9.1 million). The second property was listed for $12.1 million ($US8.35 million) and later reduced to $10.5 million ($US7.3 million).

Val Kilmer
Val Kilmer replaced Keaton as Bruce Wayne/Batman in 1995’s Batman Forever. The role established him one of the highest-paid leading men in Hollywood, pulling in $10 million ($US7 million).
He invested in a 6,000-acre New Mexico ranch featuring a log home and custom treehouse.
However, a costly divorce from actress and Willow co-star Joanne Whalley as well as his reputation for being difficult slowed Kilmer’s career.
Facing financial strain, the Top Gun star spent years trying to sell the property, initially listing portions before offering the entire estate for $47 million ($US33 million).
In 2011, he sold the ranch to a Texas tycoon for $26.8 million ($US18.5 million), nearly half the asking price.
Kilmer held just 160 acres when he died in 2025 at 65 from pneumonia following a battle with throat cancer. At the time of his death, he had a net worth of $15 million ($US10 million).

Tommy Lee Jones
Tommy Lee Jones, who played Two-Face in Batman Forever, built a $150 million ($US100 million) net worth, yet struggled with the luxury property market.
In 2002, the Oscar winner bought land in Wellington, Florida for $6.7 million ($US4.62 million). He created a 50-acre equestrian estate with a mansion, polo field, and 48 horse stalls.
The Fugitive star listed the compound for $38.7 million ($26.75 million) in 2013.
After six years without a buyer, Jones slashed the price, eventually settling for $16.6 million ($US11.5 million).
Though profitable to the initial land cost, the sale was a $21.1 million ($US15.25 million) drop from his original asking price.

Jim Carrey
Jim Carrey, who portrayed The Riddler in Batman Forever, amassed a vast $255 million ($US180 million) fortune.
The Golden Globe winner was the first actor to earn $29 million ($US20 million) for a movie.
However, his real estate portfolio recently took an eye-watering hit as the 64-year-old star permanently retreated from the Hollywood spotlight.
Carrey offloaded his long-held primary residence, a sprawling two-acre compound in Los Angeles’ elite Brentwood area for $26 million ($US17 million).
The sale was a massive $17 million ($US12 million) drop from his original $44.2 million ($US28.9 million) asking price in 2023.
Now living in a “hideaway” in Maui under pseudonyms like “Josh” or “John,” Carrey has also sold a Malibu mansion for $19.4 million ($13.4 million) and maintains a New York City apartment.

In Sydney’s Milsons Point, the former couple spent over $27.5 million acquiring six apartments in the Latitude building, including a penthouse and a private gym.
They also own Bunya Hill in New South Wales, a $6.5 million historical Southern Highlands farm featuring an 1878 mansion with a pool room, library, and guest cottage.
The actress scrapped her $4 million Rosedale coastal compound project and sold it at a loss due to privacy concerns.

That same year, they picked up a sweet set up in Beverly Hills, California, reportedly dropping $6.77 million ($US4.7 million) for a five-bedroom home.
The former A-list couple bought a designer duplex in Chelsea in 2010 for more than $13.53 million ($US9.6 million).
During her marriage to Tom Cruise, Kidman resided in a grand $8.95 million Darling Point estate, later sold for $13.2 million.

After moving to the US in 1968, he used $41,000 ($US27,000) in savings and a $15,000 ($US10,000) loan as a down payment for a $326,000 ($US215,000) six-unit apartment building.
The Terminator star lived in one unit and rented others to bodybuilders, selling the property a year later for a $220,000 ($US145,000) profit.
Schwarzenegger continued trading up to larger buildings, becoming a millionaire by age 25.
He now owns a Southern California commercial portfolio worth over $151 million ($US100 million), excluding personal homes.
The actor lives in a Brentwood estate purchased for $7.4 million ($US4.9 million) in 2002 during his marriage to Maria Shriver; the two divorced in 2021.
