XRP Ledger (XRPL) has moved into the lead in the tokenised commodity real-world asset (RWA) market, overtaking Ethereum.
U.Today, a blockchain media outlet, reported on Oct. 6 that net inflows into XRPL-based tokenised commodities total $2.2 billion so far this year. That exceeded Ethereum’s $1.6 billion over the same period.
October data from on-chain analytics firm Token Terminal and the RWA Foundation show Avalanche (AVAX) ranked third with $334.5 million, while BNB Chain recorded $57.5 million. The key point is that leadership in the tokenised commodity market has shifted from Ethereum to XRPL.
The difference stems from the two networks’ structures. Ethereum uses smart contracts for asset issuance, and gas fees vary depending on network conditions. XRPL, by contrast, supports RWA token issuance through an IOU mechanism built into the protocol. Transaction costs are a few cents, and payments are completed within 3 to 5 seconds.
The energy sector was cited as the direct factor behind XRPL overtaking Ethereum. A power generation contract-based token, JMWH, launched by Latin American company Justoken, served as a key driver. The explanation is that industrial companies chose XRPL because they value predictable fees and fast settlement.
RWA.xyz said that as of Oct. 5, XRPL’s monthly RWA transfer volume reached a record $7.03 billion. That was more than 224 times the level a month earlier. The value of representative assets was tallied at $4.52 billion, up 56% over the same period.
The stablecoin segment also showed growth. Helped by the integration of Ripple’s stablecoin RLUSD, stablecoin market capitalisation on XRPL rose to $1.25 billion, while monthly transaction volume reached $5.01 billion.
Use of XRPL is also expanding in asset management and real estate. Related assets at Franklin Templeton and Ondo Finance were tallied at $48.3 million and $187.5 million, respectively. Middle East real estate developer DAMAC tokenised pools of equity in its Dubai luxury real estate projects Park Ridge Tower, Prive, and J One.
Still, Ethereum continues to hold an edge in total RWA value locked, centred on U.S. Treasury tokenised assets. The latest shift is noteworthy in that it shows broader use of XRPL in tokenising physical assets such as real-world commodities and real estate.
