Xabi Alonso has just taken his first press conference as Chelsea manager.
He’s very well spoken and experienced in these situations, so the whole thing was very smooth – it was very much made of the usual lines about wanting to “build” something and needing players with the right attitude and mentality.
Right at the end, there was something interesting though – the mention of Alejandro Garnacho.
Garnacho could leave after Alonso confirms talks with sporting directors

Rumours have built steadily in the last few days that Garnacho wants to leave Chelsea, and that the club are happy to listen to offer for him.
It sounded like a deal was pretty unlikely – but then the Argentine was absent from Alonso’s first training sessions in charge, and we all started to take the idea that he might go a lot more seriously.
The new manager admitted that the winger had been absent, and that it was transfer related:
“We have spoken with the sporting directors and there is interest in him from other clubs. Let’s see how it develops. Hopefully it finishes in the best possible way for all parties.”
That’s promising news if we want to sell – the €50m we’re asking fot feels pretty ambitious, but the fact we have offers to listen to at all is a good start.
In other news…
Pep Chavarria is on his way to Chelsea, with the Blues about to submit a second offer for him today.
Manchester United have just confirmed the deal for Andrey Santos is complete – it’s not a transfer which Blues fans are delighted with.
