SMH Mitchells remains firmly planted in Chesterfield, and we’re currently expanding our Corporate Finance department to meet the growing ambitions of local businesses.
I am Andrew McDaid, a partner at Chesterfield-based SMH Mitchells, an accountancy and business advisory firm deeply rooted in the financial well-being of our region. My professional journey in the town took a significant step forward following the merger of Mitchells Chartered Accountants with the SMH Group. This has allowed us to combine deep local expertise with the broader resources of a regional group, ensuring we continue to support Chesterfield’s people and businesses in an ever-changing economic landscape.
What sparked your decision to invest in Chesterfield or North Derbyshire and why?
Our decision to continue investing here is rooted in our history. We’ve been part of the Chesterfield business community for nearly 160 years, supporting generations of business owners navigate their financial journeys. It’s an incredibly exciting time to play a role in North Derbyshire’s economic future as we champion our wonderful local businesses and help attract further investment.
What is your organisation looking forward to? How are you set to evolve?
SMH Mitchells remains firmly planted in Chesterfield, and we’re currently expanding our Corporate Finance department to meet the growing ambitions of local businesses. Over the years, we’ve helped owners with succession planning, acquisitions, mergers and sales. We understand these transitions are often the most significant milestones in a business owner’s career, so we combine technical expertise with a supportive, personal approach to guide them through each stage.

What makes Chesterfield and North Derbyshire a good place to work?
Chesterfield and North Derbyshire represent a fantastic place to work thanks to the sheer diversity of industries and the “can-do” attitude of the business community. There’s a genuine sense that, by working together, we are stronger. The town also offers a high-quality of life, helping businesses like ours attract and retain top-tier professional talent.
How are you supporting young people?
We view the next generation as a vital business asset. For many years, we’ve actively supported young people through structured apprenticeships, traineeships, and work experience placements. These young professionals bring fresh ideas, energy and strong technical skills, making a real contribution to our work today as we continue to evolve our services.
How are you, your organisation or your team supporting our communities and improving our quality of life?
A strong business community depends on a thriving social fabric. We empower our team to drive this through employee volunteering, providing every staff member with an annual dedicated Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) day. This allows our people to support causes they care about, ensuring that as SMH Mitchells grows, the community we serve grows with us.
