Gold (GC=F) December futures opened at $4,468.80 per troy ounce on Thursday, August 13, 2026, flat compared to Wednesday’s closing price. The price of gold shifted down some this morning, trading at $4,441.10 as of 7:53 a.m. ET.

Gold opened over $4,400 for the fourth straight day as expectations for a Fed rate hike in September appear to be dissipating. Today’s Producer Price Index (PPI) report will give the markets another helpful signal as to the Fed’s approach to next month’s meeting.

Yahoo Finance Fed Correspondent Jennifer Schonberger said yesterday’s cooling CPI report “bolsters the case for the Federal Reserve to wait. It’s hard to see them hiking in September now that we’ve had two back-to-back months of cooling inflation.”

Schonberger added that the PPI report today, coupled with the July reports for employment and CPI, will help paint a much clearer picture for September.

“I think there’s still question marks about what’s going to happen in September based on what we see on PCE numbers, … but at this point it’s hard to see them hiking based on the data we have right now.”

A gold IRA is a specialty form of self-directed IRA that’s designed for gold and other precious metals.

The table below compares the main features of standard IRAs and gold IRAs.

You must work with a specialty provider that can ensure your account complies with these IRS restrictions:

  1. Storage: Your gold must be held in an IRS-approved facility.

  2. Asset types: A gold IRA can hold physical gold, silver, platinum, or palladium — but not all forms of these metals are eligible. For example, gold bullion, silver coins, and bars must meet purity requirements. Additionally, gold bars must come from approved refiners.
