Moorish Falafel Bar in Lower Goat Lane is closed as listeria was found in salad bulgur wheat, hummus and a sample taken from a spatula used to prepare falafels.

Testing confirmed the strain identified at the restaurant is linked to a confirmed case of listeriosis and Norwich City Council has forbidden food be prepared at the site until risks are resolved.

Inspectors said this provides “strong evidence of a direct public health risk associated with the activities of the premises”.

Samia King, owner of the vegan diner and takeaway, told the BBC her team had been working with the council to find and eliminate the source of listeria.

Ms King added: “We don’t have any more information currently but we are confident this situation will be resolved quickly.

“We appreciate everyone’s patience and support.”

Listeriosis can cause symptoms such as fever, muscle aches, vomiting or diarrhea in those who are healthy.

For vulnerable groups and older people it can be life threatening.

A spokesman for City Hall said: “On 1 July, environmental health officers from Norwich City Council served a Hygiene Emergency Prohibition Notice on a food business in Norwich due to concerns about risks to public health following a notification of a small number of listeriosis cases to UKHSA.

“We will be applying to the court for the notice to be made into a Hygiene Emergency Prohibition Order.

“This means the business must remain closed while investigations continue.”

The falafel bar has a five star hygiene rating which was issued August 26 last year.
