A HSE Sligo Leitrim Mental Health Service project has won a national Bright Spark Award for improving the physical health of people with severe mental illness.

The dedicated screening clinic has delivered major improvements since 2022, including reductions in overweight rates, high blood pressure and high cholesterol among patients.

The mobile service also helps people in rural communities access physical healthcare and community supports alongside their mental health treatment.

Speaking to Ocean FM News, Dr Petra McLoughlin from HSE West and North West says receiving the award gives the team great confidence in their efforts and encourages other mental health teams to integrate physical healthcare into patient care.
