TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – Beyond traditional counseling, Cottonwood Tucson offers specialty counseling to foster spiritual health while healing.

Cottonwood Tucson says physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health are all interconnected.

Spiritual health helps clients rebuild hope. Connecting with a client’s spiritual side can make them more present and connected to everything.

“Sometimes people need to reexperience their trauma in a safe way to let out any anger that goes toward the perpetrator that they may even be taking out on themselves,” Elwood McDowell, specialty counselor at Cottonwood Tucson, said.

Cottonwood Tucson also prioritizes treating the individual and not just the diagnosis.

McDowell says he avoids reading the chart before meeting with new clients.

“Diagnosis can be helpful in the approach that you take with a person, but when people tell me their story, I’m going to assess where they are naturally and still see them as a human being,” McDowell said. “I encourage them as they begin to heal to not just see themselves as a diagnosis.”

McDowell joined 13 News’ Devyn Shea on Tucson Now to talk about it.
