Soft, ethereal music is playing in the background, and I’m sat in a circle with four other women I had only met the day before. I slowly open my eyes and realise tears have been casually streaming down my cheeks. Not quite what I had in mind when I set off for a few days on the beautiful Caribbean island of St. Lucia. But this is no ordinary trip.
The group are all here with one thing in common: to tap into our own intuition and disconnect from the stresses of everyday life. And that’s the premise behind the Spiritual Awakening Retreat at StolenTime, in partnership with the UK’s Psychic Sisters. It’s designed as part beach break, part spiritual deep dive – and I hope to leave with more than just a tan.
The vibe: wellness with a side of woo woo
The sister property to the OG wellness resort, BodyHoliday, StolenTime – an adults-only, all-inclusive resort set along the island’s northwest coast – takes a more relaxed pace than its counterpart. Although there are plenty of high-adrenaline water sports on offer if that takes your fancy (inflatable donut ride, anyone?).
But StolenTime really encourages guests to switch off and immerse themselves in the calmness of the island. There’s a no-TV policy in the rooms – I even found myself switching off from the Wi-Fi too, something I would struggle with at home.
The main event, though, is the four-day retreat led by Jayne Wallace – infamous clairvoyant whose client list includes A-listers (yes, including Kim Kardashian). She’s not remotely what you might expect: less mysterious Mystic Meg, more straight-talking East Londoner.
As a group, each day we’re encouraged to open ourselves up to the Psychic Sisters’ signature spiritual practices and a transformative journey of self-discovery. Sounds deep, but as the certified ‘witchy’ one in my friendship group, I’m excited to learn more.
Learning to read… everything
Across the four days, Jayne leads us through a curated series of workshops, starting gently with a guided meditation to open our chakras (and the aforementioned tears), helping us to develop and trust our intuition.
We then move on to aura drawings – something I knew absolutely nothing about. Paired up, we’re encouraged to look beyond our partners and see which colours we can sense surrounding them. I’m sceptical, but then, surprisingly, intuition takes over. I begin to see colours appearing and enveloping the shape of my partner. We learn what each colour represents: my partner’s energy field shows lots of green (healing energy) and yellow hues (abundance).
I can also now add psychometry – the art of reading objects – to my list of skills. We analyse tropical flowers and somehow link their colours and shapes back to our personalities. And of course, crystals – lots of crystals. Again, we’re encouraged to let intuition guide us as we interpret colours, shapes and textures for our partners. Surprisingly, again I find this comes quite easily, and some of the insights I share resonate. Maybe I’m better at this than I think.
The standout moment, though, is tarot
This is the part I’m most excited for. I’ve had my cards read before, but learning how to use my own intuition to read them myself is fascinating. Jayne explains that everyone has this ability, and with practice, we can hone in on our gut instincts.
We’re encouraged to shuffle our cards and lay nine on the table, picking apart symbols and patterns to build a narrative from what intuitively comes to mind. Once again, it surprisingly comes naturally to me (a theme on this trip) and I start to wonder if maybe Jayne is right. After the group reads for each other, some of the staff want to get in on the act too. Practising on each other is one thing; doing it for unsuspecting hotel staff while Wallace casually drops eerily accurate insights is another and we’re all in awe of her talents.
The in-between moments matter too
What makes the retreat work isn’t just the structured sessions – it’s the whole package StolenTime has to offer. The pace is slow in the best possible way, and between workshops you’re free to experience as much or as little as you’d like.
For me, this means mornings spent on the near-empty beach, sipping fresh coconut water picked that morning, or treating myself to a holistic massage in the spa in the afternoon. Pure bliss.
Even if you don’t fully buy into the spiritual framework, there’s something powerful about being forced to stop, reflect without your phone buzzing every five seconds.
The verdict
Did I become psychic? Short answer, not exactly. However, this unique experience leaves me with a strong sense of clarity and confidence in my own intuition. I love stepping out of my usual routine and pushing myself beyond my comfort zone. In a world where algorithms tell us what to watch, buy and think, there’s something refreshing about being encouraged to trust your own gut instead. And yes, I did come home with crystals – and my own tarot deck.
