Deep cuts to migration proposed by conservative political parties will damage an economy weakened by Labor’s entrenched federal budget deficits that are already putting pressure on younger Australians and exacerbating inflation, former Treasury Secretary Martin Parkinson has warned.
Parkinson, who worked as a senior public servant for both sides of politics, argued the significant reduction in migrants planned by the Coalition and One Nation would leave government debt repayments to be met by spreading the income tax burden among a smaller proportion of working-age Australians.
