Economists have cast doubt on Treasurer Jim Chalmers’ suggestion property prices will grow over the next couple of years, arguing Treasury analysis showing Labor’s tax changes would barely dent the housing market had been “mugged by reality” as the downturn deepens.

Chalmers on Wednesday conceded “policy changes” were among several factors weighing on the housing market, alongside economic conditions and interest rates, but stopped short of pointing to the government’s tax changes in the May budget.
