Major boost for the local economy thanks to the Southsea Food Festival

Southsea Food Festival 2026 generated an estimated £2.18 million in visitor spending underlining its growing role in supporting Portsmouth‘s economy and tourism sector.

New research shows the award-winning event attracted an estimated 57,200 visits over the weekend in July. A record 140 businesses took part in the Portsmouth 100 event, with over a third based in the city .

Visitor feedback was overwhelmingly positive. The research found 98% rated their experience as good or excellent. People praised the atmosphere, quality and variety of food and drink, and the opportunity to discover local independent businesses. Almost two-thirds of visitors were returning attendees, highlighting the event’s strong and loyal following.

Councillor Steve Pitt, Leader of Portsmouth City Council with responsibilities for economic development said: “Southsea Food Festival has become much more than a popular weekend event. It is a significant contributor to our local economy, helping independent businesses reach new customers, increasing footfall across Southsea.

“The fact that visitors spent an estimated £2.18 million during the weekend demonstrates the real economic value events like this can bring. It supports jobs, encourages repeat visits and helps strengthen Portsmouth’s reputation as one of the South Coast’s most exciting destinations for food, drink and leisure.”

The findings also show clear benefits for Southsea’s businesses with 55% of local businesses reporting increased footfall during the festival and 59% reporting a positive overall business impact. Among festival traders, 83% reported positive commercial outcomes from taking part, while 96% said they intend to return in 2027.

“Southsea Food Festival gives independent businesses like ours a fantastic platform to reach thousands of people in a single weekend. We met new customers, strengthened relationships with existing ones and saw a real boost in sales.

“The event creates an opportunity to showcase Portsmouth’s food scene at its very best. Many of the people who visited our stall have continued to support us after the event, which shows the longer-term value it delivers for local businesses.”

Southsea Food Festival 2026 in partnership with the Hendy Group took place on 4 & 5 July and was organised by Portsmouth City Council. Recent recognition as Event of the Year at the Portsmouth Business Awards has further cemented its reputation as one of the South Coast’s leading food events.
