Hong Kong stocks are facing a significant liquidity test as market enthusiasm surrounding a major upcoming listing reshapes fund flows and investor portfolios. According to a report from the South China Morning Post, the initial public offering of Elon Musk’s company, which raised US$75 billion in the United States, adds to a series of headwinds for Asia’s third-largest market. These headwinds include U.S. monetary tightening and sluggish corporate earnings growth, analysts have warned.

The Hong Kong market is set to see the expiration of selling restrictions on shares worth HK$760 billion (US$97 billion) in the third quarter. The market has no controls on fund flows for global investors, making it susceptible to overseas news. Its total capitalization stands at US$7 trillion, ranking behind mainland China and Japan in the Asia-Pacific region.

Rahul Ghosh, a portfolio specialist for global equities at U.S. asset-management firm T. Rowe Price, commented that historical experience suggests markets can experience some weakness before large IPOs as investors raise cash. Ghosh indicated that overseas traders could sell Hong Kong stocks to fund participation in the IPO or to buy into the stock after its listing, though he noted such pressure often proves temporary.
