The timing tracks the tournament. The World Cup kicks off June 11 across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, and creators raced to launch ahead of it. June already shows roughly 5,047 tokens, a count that can climb as the event runs.

The scale is stark. More football meme coins were minted in May than in all of 2024 combined, according to BeInCrypto desk data drawn from Solana fungible-token records.
That spike lines up with the pre-tournament window, when squad lists finalized and fan attention built. Creation alone, however, does not show whether real money chased these token launch events.
DEX Buy Volume Confirms Money Chased the World Cup Trade
Trading activity tracked the launch boom. Daily DEX buy-side volume for these tokens peaked May 13 at roughly $542 million, the single biggest day in the dataset.
DEX means decentralized exchange, a venue where tokens trade peer to peer without an intermediary. That same peak day counted about 1,564 active tokens, so the buying spread across many coins rather than one breakout name.
The flows fit a front-running pattern. Volume built into early May, spiked mid-month, then cooled, the profile of speculative positioning ahead of a known event. Where this happened matters as much as how much.
Why the Fifa Coin Mania Is a Solana Story
The trend barely touched rival chains. Buy volume for Fifa-themed coins on Solana reached about $1,569 million in May, per Dune-extracted data, against just $3.1 million on Base and $2.4 million on Ethereum.
That puts Solana near 500 times Base and roughly 650 times Ethereum for this trade. The same theme exists on EVM chains but rounds to noise next to Solana.
The reason is mechanical. Solana’s low fees and fast settlement let traders mint and flip cheap tokens at speed, which suits meme coin speculation. A culture built around fast, low-cost launches made the chain the natural home once the World Cup catalyst hit.
With the tournament now underway, June’s launch count decides whether the World Cup sustains the frenzy or May marked the top.
